787 businesses hold a current home improvement contractor registration under a business name that says flooring with an address of record in New Jersey, per the Division of Consumer Affairs’ verification system on September 12, 2026. Every one of them is on this site, by city and county, with its license record. Nothing else gets a business on the list — not a sign-up, not a review score, not a payment.
New Jersey has no flooring license. Flooring is done under the Home Improvement Contractor registration with the Division of Consumer Affairs, which the Contractors’ Registration Act requires of any business doing residential improvement work — and the Act’s own definition of home improvement names carpeting and attached floor coverings. Registration means an annual fee, a disclosure statement, proof of $500,000 of commercial general liability insurance, and the 13VH registration number on every contract, estimate and advertisement. There is no exam and no bond. What a homeowner gets from it is the insurance requirement, a written-contract rule for any job over $500, and the Consumer Fraud Act behind the contract.
The registration says nothing about trade — tens of thousands of New Jersey businesses hold one, from roofers to kitchen remodelers. The only thing on the state record that can say “flooring” is the registered business name, so that is the rule here: an active registration whose registered name or trading name says floor, flooring, carpet, hardwood or parquet. A remodeler who also lays floors will not appear, and cannot be added by hand. Tile is left out on purpose; in the states that license the trade, tile is its own classification. New Jersey has enacted a law that will replace registration with a license and an exam once its rules are in force; on the date this list was taken, the register still shows registrations.

New Jersey requires the 13VH registration number on every contract, estimate and advertisement. A contractor who can’t produce it on the spot has answered the question.
