Sand and soil tracked in from outside act like sandpaper under every footstep. Dry removal — sweeping, dust-mopping, vacuuming — does more to preserve a floor than any cleaning product ever will. Do it more often than you think you need to.

Almost every hard-surface floor gets damaged by standing water at the seams, not on the surface. A microfiber mop that feels barely moist is what you want. A dripping string mop and a bucket isn't — not on anything except sealed tile and concrete.
Alkaline cleaners strip wood finishes and dissolve wool. Acidic cleaners etch stone and grout. A neutral (pH 6–8) cleaner made for your specific material is the right call about 95% of the time.
Rubbing a spill on carpet drives it into the backing and distorts the pile permanently. Work from the outside of the spill inward, with a white cloth, pressing rather than scrubbing.
Any new cleaner, spotter or sealer goes in a closet corner first. Wait a full day. This one habit prevents the single most common irreversible flooring mistake there is.

Screen-and-recoat on wood floors. Abrading the top layer of finish and applying a fresh coat costs a fraction of a full refinish, takes a day, and removes no wood at all. Do it every 5–10 years and a 3/4" hardwood floor will genuinely outlive you. Wait until the finish is worn through to bare wood and you have spent a full sanding — one of only five to eight you will ever get.

Vinegar is acidic, so it etches marble, limestone, travertine, cement grout, polished concrete and terrazzo — that dull mark is dissolved surface, not a stain, and sealer does not prevent it. On polyurethane-finished wood it gradually breaks down the finish. Use a pH-neutral cleaner made for your specific floor.
A pH-neutral cleaner sold specifically for wood, applied with a barely damp microfiber mop. Avoid vinegar, ammonia and oil soap: oil soap leaves a residue that stops any future recoat from bonding, which turns a cheap screen-and-recoat into a full sanding. Dry removal of grit matters more than any product, because grit is what abrades the finish.
Hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months for residential carpet, annually in heavy-soil environments, using an IICRC-certified technician. Dry within 6 to 12 hours to prevent microbial growth. Vacuuming traffic lanes daily to weekly does more for appearance retention than deep cleaning does.
Blot as much as possible under pressure with towels, then apply an enzymatic cleaner generously enough to reach as deep as the urine did, and let it dwell the full time on the label — enzymes need contact time to break down uric acid crystals. If it reached the pad, professional sub-surface extraction is the only reliable fix. On wool, get a wool-experienced professional involved the same day, because urine is alkaline and strips wool dye within hours.
