Waterproof flooring

“Waterproof” describes the material — whether the plank, tile or slab is damaged by standing water at all. It says nothing about the installation, which is where water actually gets underneath even a fully waterproof floor. Both halves matter, and this page covers both.

Waterproof describes the material, not the installation

A plank or tile rated waterproof stays intact if submerged — but the floor as installed is only as waterproof as its weakest seam. Grout lines, plank edges and the transition at every wall are where water actually gets underneath, whatever the material itself can tolerate.

Five things worth knowing

Waterproof and water-resistant are different claims

Waterproof means the material itself survives submersion with no damage — SPC and WPC vinyl core, porcelain, stone, concrete, epoxy and terrazzo all qualify. Water-resistant means it tolerates spills and normal moisture if wiped up promptly, which describes solid hardwood with a quality finish or a water-resistant laminate — neither is rated for standing water.

The seams decide it, not the field

Every waterproof material still has joints somewhere — grout lines in tile, click seams in vinyl plank, the perimeter at every wall. Water that sits long enough finds its way through an unsealed grout joint or a seam that was not fully engaged during installation. The material rating assumes correct installation; a rushed one can defeat it.

Wear layer thickness is a durability spec, not a waterproofing one

A thicker wear layer on vinyl resists scratches and dents better, but it does not make the plank more or less waterproof — the core underneath determines that, and SPC and WPC cores are both fully waterproof regardless of wear layer mil rating. Pay more for mils expecting better scratch resistance, not better water performance.

Subfloor moisture still has to be managed underneath

A waterproof floor keeps water from damaging the flooring itself, but trapped moisture under it can still support mold in the subfloor, especially over a slab. Concrete moisture testing and, where called for, a vapor barrier remain part of the installation even when the flooring above will not care.

Check the written warranty, not the marketing copy

“Waterproof” on a product's packaging is a marketing claim; the written warranty is the one that matters if something goes wrong. Confirm it specifically covers water damage and ask what it excludes — most exclude damage from water that sat under the flooring for an extended period, regardless of how it got there.

Common questions

Waterproof flooring — frequently asked

Yes — both SPC and WPC core luxury vinyl plank are fully waterproof at the material level. The core is vinyl and stone-plastic or wood-plastic composite, neither of which absorbs water or swells. The installation still needs correct seams and transitions to keep water from getting underneath, but the plank itself is unaffected by submersion.

Standard laminate is not — its core is high-density fiberboard, which is wood, and it will swell if water reaches it through a seam. Water-resistant laminate has surface treatment and tighter joints that buy time against spills, typically 24 to 72 hours per the warranty, but that is a spill warranty, not a flood warranty. A separate sealed-core laminate tier exists that is genuinely waterproof — check which tier a specific product belongs to before assuming either way.

SPC vinyl plank, WPC vinyl plank, porcelain tile, polished concrete and epoxy are all fully waterproof and suit a basement’s slab-on-grade conditions well. Solid hardwood is excluded from basements outright regardless of finish; engineered hardwood tolerates more than solid but is still not a waterproof choice.

No — it prevents the flooring itself from being damaged by water, which is a different thing. Moisture trapped between a waterproof floor and the subfloor can still support mold in the subfloor or framing even though the flooring shows no damage. Address the moisture source and use a vapor barrier where called for, regardless of how waterproof the flooring above is rated.

Both are fully waterproof at the material level, so the practical difference is in the seams. Grouted tile joints, once sealed, resist water well but the grout itself needs periodic resealing. Vinyl plank’s click or glue seams need no resealing but rely on correct installation to stay tight. Neither has a meaningful edge in a properly installed, properly maintained floor.
