Concrete Polishing Introduction

by Mercie Hallow

Concrete Polishing is called a no-wax concrete floor surface as there is no need to maintain it through waxing. The natural luster, sheen and gloss that emanates from a polished concrete surface is the reason behind it. Concrete Polishing also involves several grinding/ polishing process so that the concrete surface is grounded off all the roughness it initially possesses. Grinding discs are used during this process to remove loose aggregates and finally reveal a smoother floor finish.

The concrete floor or surface needs to be properly prepared before the application of concrete polishing. A newly placed concrete usually takes about 28 days to cure before polishing. Almost every commercially available concrete can be grounded and polished although there are concretes that are either too porous that are not a good candidate for concrete polishing. This problem can then be addressed by applying hardeners on the surface. Hardeners tend to fill in the gaps and react with the concrete to create a crystalline hard surface.

Polished concrete is very easy to maintain as regular mopping or wiping with a damp cloth can remove simple dirt and stains. It is very economical as there is no need for waxing since the surface has a natural gloss and sheen that could be very well taken care of polishing conditioners to retain its shine. It is possible that a polished concrete may lose its gleam over the years but there are available commercial polishers that can restore it in no time.

Concrete Polishing is often seen in industrial and manufacturing plants where a high level of human traffic is present and the need for a floor that can carry heavy loads is present. Concrete Polishing is also an economical choice in these areas as it tends to bounce back the reflected light from the ceiling lighting fixtures, thus saving up on electricity costs.

Aside from industrial spaces and manufacturing plants polished concrete is also an ideal choice to use in homes, offices, hospitals, hotels, buildings, churches, retail store outlets, etc. The benefits that one can derive from using a polished concrete floor make it an ideal choice for both indoor and outdoor flooring applications.
