Tools Used in Concrete Polishing
The art of concrete polishing involves at first a grinding process that reveals a smoother concrete surface. The smooth concrete surface then is topped and sealed with a sealant and coated with epoxy coating to achieve gloss and luster that is just so fantastic. It is indeed very agreeable that polished concrete is more and more becoming a choice for concrete flooring because of its aesthetic appeal and benefits.
There are actually a lot of tools essential for a successful concrete polishing. These tools are always present in a concrete contractors toolkit as they all serve individual uses depending on their purposes. One such kind of tool is the concrete grinder. Concrete grinders grind the rough concrete surface prior to polishing and epoxy coating.
Concrete grinders have interchangeable discs depending on the variety of application. Rougher discs are usually used during first grinding process. Some discs have diamond abrasives to ensure proper polishing of concrete. After the initial grinding process the disc is usually replaced with finer abrasives to finely grind the concrete surface towards smoothness. Next step is to add colorant if a colored concrete is preferred before sealing off with a sealer or epoxy coating.
Before the actual concrete polishing the surface needs to be cleaned and thoroughly prepared. Dirt, dust and stains should be removed as well as any loose aggregates, chippings or cracks. Power washers are often recommended as a cleaning tool as they effectively wash out dirt and stain through the high pressurized water coming out of the nozzle. Some power washers blast a mixture of water and san particles to the concrete.
Grinders like power washers are also good cleaning agents as they stripped off stains that tend to settle onto the concrete surface. Grinders are also used in order to remove a few millimeters off the concrete surface to be able to reveal the aggregates within. Exposed aggregates are very good decorative elements as they tend to reveal a natural marble-like look of the concrete. Polished concrete with exposed aggregates is both an economical and aesthetically sound solution to decorative concrete.
