Concrete Polishing and its Benefits
A new type of flooring is now becoming more popular to not only to business owners but to homeowners as well, and this is called concrete polishing. Concrete, as you might picture in your mind as you are reading this, must be drab and grey, but thats not really the case anymore. As most groundwork for the construction of homes is concrete, nowadays, you can make it your flooring too, through the use of concrete polishing. That fact makes concrete polishing a practical option for flooring. It gives consumers an option over carpeting, linoleum, marble, tiles, wood, etc. wherein most of which need a lot of upkeep.Polished concrete is a durable surface that has an attractive and dazzling glossy finish which doesnt require costly refinishing or replacement, upkeep and use of strong disinfecting chemicals.
Polished concrete can be customized according to your personal preferences by the creation of designs and patterns for various areas of the house, to the addition of colors, to making them appear as if they are tiles or stained to imitate the look of polished stone.
At present, because of all the new technology in polishing equipment and techniques, contractors have created a new way to make concrete floors attractive and shiny by grinding concrete floor surfaces. Grinding a concrete floor surface is comparable to sanding wood. Polishing machines are used to grind down concrete surfaces to the desired smoothness using discs with shattered pieces of diamonds which make them similar to sandpaper. With this process, you can simply and easily add designs and patterns to your floor, creating a more unique design concept. There is also the option of concrete acid staining (the addition of colors to your floor) to maximize the beauty of your polished concrete.
New floors normally dont need any special kind of preparation to be able to achieve a beautiful and expensive looking finish. However, you must wait at least 28 days before being able to do any polishing on them. Existing floors however, need some kind of preparation. They have to be removed of dirt, grease, blemishes, stains, coating etc. Extremely wavy concrete or porous ones may not be advisable to be polished. Experienced contractors can generally let you know whether your floor would be advisable for polishing.
Polished concrete has multiple benefits. It has a low maintenance appeal because it is easy to clean, and is generally dirt-resistant. Cleaning this type of floor would only require a sweeping and mopping. Another benefit is that you can also do-it-yourself. You can get yourself a polishing machine (there are hand-held kinds available) and polish away yourself. Polished concrete also does not need waxes or coatings that can be quite expensive and bothersome. Finally, floors are not the only things you can polish, also countertops. You may opt for polished concrete instead of marble or granite and still achieve an expensive and beautiful, glossy finish with a considerably smaller budget.
