Grout Cleaning Methods

by Rick Amorey

Many of us would have to contend with the necessity to clean his or her grout. You are probably like me; reasonably irritated by the mere prospect of kneeling down and scrubbing in between your bathroom tiles. Not liking it doesn't mean it cannot be ignored, unfortunately. If unhindered, your grout may become a breeding ground for dangerous organisms, most notably the infamous black mold.

Now that we've established that grout cleaning is necessary, let us check out the popular cleaning methods. First, and most tedious of them all, is manual scrubbing using a toothbrush and a generous amount of detergent. While I applaud the tenacity, I'm afraid it's just something that's too tedious for anyone to uncertake. And, at best, you can only clean the grout slightly. It will never be clean enough for anybody's tastes, no matter how much they try.

The next option that would come to mind once you realize that the aforementioned method won't work is finding a better substitute for the detergent. If this is the case, then you will note that there are many homemade solutions available online. Of these, many (such as vinegar) won't work. So how do you know which one will? In my personal experience, chlorine bleach is able to clear out grout dirt well, but it will also discolor your grout and tiles. You may need to find an alternative if your grout is dyed.

You may also be familiar with some of the commercial machines dedicated to grout cleaning. Most popular among these is the electric scrubbers; these may work out pretty well. But do note that it will only save you personal energy; as a scrubber, the effectiveness of it will still rely on the cleaning solution that you use. And then, if you plan on getting the bigger machines, I advice caution: They are hard to use, and if untrained, you may end up damaging your tiles.

How about this sudden flash of insight; why don't you consider hiring professional grout cleaners? They have these big machines in stock, and have been trained in handling it. Using these, they will clean your grout better than you would on your best day. Although I would advice you to maintain a cleaning upkeep on your grout from here on, should you choose to contact them. An easy way to perform this upkeep is to simply spray alcohol on your tiles at night, after everyone is done using the area. If it stays longer for a long time, you wouldn't have to call the cleaners as often.
