Grout Restoration

by Rick Amorey

Grout is the first thing to spread and layer upon a surface when one wants to add tiling to a surface to a pool, a kitchen counter, or a bathroom floor. Grout is a type of cement that holds the tiles firmly in place. But it is necessary to keep it clean, as it easily gets dirty, or worse, infested with fungi.

Grout is very porous material. Like how a sponge is, it has quite a lot of pinprick holes which absorb foreign material like algae, moisture, juice…and also encourages mold growth. These get in deeper every day and gets much more difficult to remove with scrubbing once you decide to finally clean it up.

Not only does cleaning up the grout make the area easier on the eyes, but more importantly, it keeps your home a lot more safe in general. I've seen quite a few poorly maintained grout around, and I'll tell you: Out of 10 dirt grouts, 9 can easily be cleaned. If you can't do it, whether by time constraints or other reasons, chances are good you can call up a professional to do it for you.

Before you think about anything drastic like re-grouting your entire area, my advice is to first find a professional grout cleaner first. It should only take about a couple of hours, double that time for larger areas such as a pool. Only areas that are seriously in bad shape and never maintained will need to be replaced, and even then, grout cleaners will replace them for you.

These grout-cleaning professionals can handle their job pretty well, and I personally vouch for them. They have modern equipment that use various methods, and I've seen the favorable results time and again. You will be glad to see your tiles and your grout looking brand new again.
