Keeping Grout Clean

by Sam Weyland

Cleaning the grout in your shower is an important hygienic ritual in any home. Left untended, grout absorbs the dirty substances around it, and in effect it becomes a breeding ground for various bacteria. If you're wondering why you're always sick, even if you maintain proper hygienic practices, then perhaps your bathroom grout is being ignored. Perhaps black mold is already growing in your bathroom.

Black Mold, bearing the scientific name Stachybotrys Chartarum,is a greenish-black fungus that usually infests slimy bathroom floors. It is a recorded cause of certain medical problems since the 1930s, making both humans and animals sick with different diseases depending on severity. Some are just simple cases of the sniffles, but the most devastating event reported to be caused by black mold is when an infant's lungs bled.

It is important to keep to keep your grout free from black mold to avoid these things from affecting your family. Just perform preventive upkeep, and it will keep the fungus away. Doing this will contribute to you achieving a clean and fit lifestyle.

But how about the shower? Since it is always damp, this all the more reason for you to clean the place regularly. But do be careful; skin contact with the black mold is already enough to give you a rash. Wear rubber gloves on if you want to clean the area, and keep the place well-ventilated so you don't inhale too much of it.

Alternatively, you may opt to hire professional grout cleaners if you don't think you're up for the task. They will get rid of the problem in no time.

Finally, if your grout becomes mold and bacteria-free, you should consider grout maintenance more seriously. A simple way is to make an alcohol-water solution, and store it in a spray bottle. Apply it onto the floor after every shower. You can't get simpler than that, and yet it will help keep your grout clean for some time.
