Laying A Stone Floor
In improving your home interiors, don't forget to include the floor. Many homeowners overlook this "down part" of the house and don't mind the floor when undertaking a home renovation. However, the floor can make a difference and an impact on how a home's design looks. In addition to the appearance, the floor also adds to the quality of how a room feels. There are several ways to upgrade the floor, one of which is by the choice of flooring material. For this article, let's talk about stone flooring.
Now, your first thought at this point is probably something along the lines of "isn't stone cold?" and to a certain extent you are right. However, if you are building a house from scratch you are obviously completely at liberty to put in underfloor heating which will warm your floor through, just taking the edge off the cold, if necessary. And you should definitely consider the fact that the sun warms stone up very easily, so a room floored with stone that catches direct sunlight will keep its heat for several hours after the sun has gone.
Stone is more than just stone. This means that there is also variety in stone flooring. There are the creamy sandstone color and the darker shade of blue. A room with a light or pale paint will look nice with darker stone flooring. You can also enhance the living space further by adorning the floor with area rugs.
Apart from the benefits of breaking up a large expanse of color, area rugs can also be particularly welcome on a stone floor, as it can be quite a physically cold surface at night and first thing in the morning. Any kind of area rug will keep bare feet off a cold stone floor, but on a strong dark stone, such as slate, pale and fluffy area rugs will provide a pleasing contrast in color and texture, making a design statement as well as providing soft, warm stepping stones from the doorway to the furniture.
Stone is a sturdy material that lasts for a long time. You won't be installing or fixing your flooring anytime soon with this material. Moreover, with the different colors available, who said stone is boring?
