Uses For Rugs

I assume that you buy an area rug because you have every intention of using it. You already know where to put it and what it is for. It may be for decorative reasons or for practical purposes.

Choosing an area rug depends not only on the room it will be placed in, but strangely enough also on the personality of the person who makes the choice, which brings us to our first use of an area rug: the focal point.

When we speak of focal point, this is the decor that attracts attention at first glance. This is the diva of the room decorations. To be an effective focal point, the area rug must have a striking quality, something that will stand out among the crowd of other furnishings.

Second, area rugs can be accessories. They may not be the center of attention but they play a major part in making the central piece the star. Rugs are mostly in neutral colors and in more delicate designs.

Finally, area rugs can be used for convenience or functionality. This is actually my preference. I like area rugs that can help around the house and not just lay around. Rugs of this kind are those that give a room some color, warmth or personality. So if you think your room is boring, time to ask assistance from a good piece of functional rug. Most people use such kind for wall-to-wall carpeting to protect the carpet. See how smart that is?

Knowing the role of your rugs at home is just the start. You have to figure out the right size.

Evaluate the use of the rug in a certain room and you will find the right size, whether you need a smaller or a bigger one. You'll also know if you need to buy a colorful, lighter or neutral-colored rug, or should there be a need for a thicker fabric for the busy areas such as the doorways and staircase.

Having two or more rugs in a room is perfectly acceptable. Like above mentioned, it's all about coordination. There should be a balanced, fitting look between the area rugs and the rest of the room. Use different sizes for the area rugs so that it will not have a divided look in the room.
