Why is Cork Flooring So Successful?
There is a good reason that cork is becoming the premier choice for flooring across the USA. No matter what room you put it in, it looks beautiful, and feels nice under foot. It is definitely an option to be considered. If you are concerned for the environment at all, one of its many benefits, aside from cost, are its reduced impact on the environment.
The cork used is harvested from the cork oak tree. Unlike Pine, Oak, and other trees used for flooring, the Cork Oak Tree does not have to be cut down (killed) to make the flooring. To harvest the cork, every 9 years the bark is stripped off of the tree. This does not kill the tree and does not damage the forest that it grows in. There are not many other flooring options that provide this level of environmental friendliness.
Many harvesters believe that many of the trees live and thrive for over 200 years because of this harvesting process. The same cannot be said for pine or oak, where, once they are cut down must be replanted. This is an incredibly destructive an inefficient process, as it may take over 40 years for the tree to grow to a reasonable size where the process is repeated.
Not only is the tree not obliterated during the process, but the floors themselves are really accomplished by engaging the waste product* of the cork (used for alcoholic beverage bottles) fabricating procedure. So, your cork decking is harvested in a way that is beneficial to the environment as it is attained from fabrics that are being reused and would otherwise be cast-off.
Just because a product is great for the environment because it is made from recycled materials, does not mean there are many possibilities for good and to choose from. Otherwise, you can get just about any color and style you want! Sophisticated production techniques means that just about anything you think is likely available. You can buy colors from white to red to blue, with forms that look like cork, hardwood, or marble. The possibilities are truly endless.
By learning more about cork floors, hopefully you will choose this product for what it does for the world we live in a friendly atmosphere and beautiful products that you can use throughout your home. Not only for particular areas, but also makes a good conversation where you can share with others the values of sustainable and recycled products?
